Coca-Cola To Offer New Beverage Next Year

Compiled From Wire Services

Coca-Cola Co. will offer a new beverage called Surge next year and introduce it with two TV commercials during the Super Bowl, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported today.

The green soda has been test-marketed in Norway for eight months. It will be sold in bright red and green bottles and cans, the newspaper reported. The 12-ounce cans will have wide mouths, a first for a Coca-Cola product.

Surge will be marketed toward teen-agers and young adults and will compete with rival Pepsico’s Mountain Dew, which vastly outsells Coca-Cola’s similar Mello Yello. The newspaper said Mello Yello will remain on the shelves.

In Norway, the new product is called Urge and is sold in five flavors - Valencia orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit and tangerine. In the United States, it will be a blend of citrus flavors, the newspaper said.
