Police Seize Drugs, Loaded Gun From Car

A routine traffic stop in north Spokane on Sunday uncovered a variety of weapons and drugs.

When officers pulled over Paul Brown at Indiana and Lidgerwood, the 44-year-old Hayden Lake man reached for a sheathed knife, police said.

Officers handcuffed Brown, then searched his car.

They found a virtual pharmacy of drugs and drug packaging equipment: packets of heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana, pills without matching prescriptions, scales, syringes, more than $5,000 cash, a pager and cellular phone.

Police also found a loaded semi-automatic pistol, stashed under the seat, where Brown said his wallet was hidden.

Brown was booked into Spokane County Jail on weapons and drug charges.

He posted a $5,000 bond and was released Monday.

Burglar unable to steal safe

A would-be burglar at a North Side travel agency left behind more than he carried away, abandoning a hand truck after a failed attempt to steal a 950-pound safe.

The burglar rifled drawers and fingered business checks at Travel Consultants Inc. on North Division, but didn’t steal anything, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department.

“He didn’t come away with much,” said Deputy Dave Reagan.

The burglary happened sometime during the night of Dec. 12. An employee found the sacked office the next day and called police.

The burglar entered by prying open the front door, Reagan said.

The hand truck stood next to the safe, which had been moved just a few inches.

Deputies called the hand truck manufacturer, who said they will help police trace the buyer.

Woman thwarts possible scam

An elderly North Side woman turned down an offer for $500,000 last week, sniffing a scam when the caller asked the woman to let him into her apartment.

The caller told the woman he would drive by in a gray van in a few minutes. The man asked to be let into her apartment, the woman told police.

She hung up before the caller finished explaining the prize and pick-up.

Never let strangers into your home, police warn. Utility employees are an exception when they have photo ID from their company.
