G-Prep Girls Only Home Team To Win

A long night for the home fans in the final pre-Christmas Greater Spokane League basketball games Monday night was salvaged by the Gonzaga Prep girls.

Mead came away from North Central with two victories - 57-15 in girls action and 61-49 in the boys - and the Ferris boys stopped the Bullpups 52-39 at G-Prep.

At halftime of the girls game, it looked like it might be a shutout for the home teams, but the Bullpups limited the Saxons to just two field goals after the break and pulled out a 48-40 victory.

Gonzaga Prep 48, Ferris 40

The Saxons (1-2) led 28-25 at the break, but the Bullpups (1-1) turned up the defense and used a 23-12 margin the second half to pull it out.

Jennifer Williams’ 13 points led G-Prep. Ferris, which scored most of its baskets the first half on second efforts, was led by Karie Pruett’s 13.

North Central (0-3) had no answer for Allie Bailey, who dominated inside for Mead (3-0) and scored a game-high 16 points.

West Valley 50, Sandpoint 28

The Bulldogs had the leading scorer and leading rebounder, but depth and defense produced the win for the Eagles at home.

Natalie Ward had 12 points and Mary Jo Gill 13 rebounds for Sandpoint (0-7), but only five other Bulldogs scored. WV (4-2) got scoring from eight players, with Dawn Salfer (11) and Angie Kallas (10) leading the way.

The Eagles had 41 rebounds, 22 on the offensive end.

J.J. Klaus had 18 points to lead three double-figure scorers for the Panthers (1-2), who jumped on top early and didn’t allow the Indians (0-3) closer than nine points after halftime.

Tom Castillo had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Mead. Ed Eschenbacher was the only Indian in double figures with 13 points.

Ferris 52, Gonzaga Prep 39

Charlie Gordon scored all 14 of his points the second half as the Saxons (3-0) broke open a tight game and pulled away from the Bullpups (1-1).

Ferris, which hit 23 of its 39 shots in the game, led just 23-20 at halftime. The Bullpups’ comeback hopes took a blow when season scoring leader Shane Hartnett went down with an ankle injury in the third quarter. He was taken to a hospital for X-rays. Tyson Theilman’s 11 points led G-Prep.

Vinnie Pecht hit a turnaround 8-footer from the key with 7 seconds left to give the Eagles a victory over the visiting Bulldogs.

Sandpoint called timeout with 4 seconds left to set up a final play, but the Bulldogs’ pass to halfcourt was picked off by Pecht to preserve the win for WV (3-2).

Josh Sweet erupted for 19 of his gamehigh 23 points in the second half for West Valley. The 6-foot-6 Pecht finished with 14 points.
