Obituaries

Edward Jennings Spokane

Visitation for Edward Dayton Jennings, 91, is scheduled from noon to 9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Service is planned for 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Jennings, who died Saturday, was born in Aberdeen, Wash.

He served in the Navy from 1923 to 1927 and again from 1942 to 1945.

He worked for the Spokane School District as a carpenter and had also worked for Stevens County as a sheriff’s deputy.

He was a member of the Carpenters Union and the Spokane Sportsmen’s Club.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel Jennings; three sons, Edward, David and Roy Jennings, all of Spokane; four daughters, Beverly Reeves of Wenatchee, Jane Hansen of Richland, Colleen Nelson of Seattle and Patricia Martin of Spokane; 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Lucille Ellis Dalton Gardens, Idaho

Service for Lucille Jeanneane Ellis, 63, was Monday. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ellis, who was born in Lewistown, Mont., died Thursday in an automobile accident in Richland.

She was raised in Montana and moved to Colburn, Idaho, in 1954. She moved to Dalton Gardens in 1968.

Mrs. Ellis was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Post Falls, where she served as the secretary and bookkeeper.

Survivors include her husband, Robert “Bob”; a son, Robert “Rob” Ellis Jr. of Coeur d’Alene; a daughter, Penelope “Penny” Roath of Hayden Lake, Idaho; three brothers, Edward Rice of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Laurence Rice of Kennewick and Douglas Rice of Spokane; four sisters, Pauline Norris of Osburn, Idaho, Judy Gustafsen of Mead, and Laura Eggers and Helen Schell, both of Spokane; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Post Falls Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Flossie Berg Sandpoint

Service for Flossie Mae Berg, 72, will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Coffelt’s Moon Chapel in Sandpoint. Coffelt Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Berg, who was born in Ponderay, Idaho, died Sunday.

She graduated from Sandpoint High School. She had worked as a welder in shipyards during World War II and went on to become a cashier at several grocery stores in Sandpoint and Spokane.

Mrs. Berg operated the Lo-Price Superette in Sandpoint until 1972. She also operated the family farm in Sandpoint.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl.

Survivors include three children, Terry DeMers of Renton, Wash., Rosemary Bell of Arizona and James Berg of Otis Orchards; two stepchildren, Tosca Hood of Oregon and Darwin Berg of California; two brothers, Elby and Lynvile Bocook, both of Spokane; three sisters, Dorothy Passmore of Idaho Falls, Ruby West of Bothell, Wash., and Gracie Worley of Oregon; 11 grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Rolland Cannon Spokane

Graveside service for Rolland E. Cannon, 88, was Monday at the Newport (Wash.) Cemetery.

Mr. Cannon, a 53-year resident of Spokane, died Friday.

He was born on his parents’ homestead near Dalkena, in the Usk, Wash., area.

He worked on the family farm and then went to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Pend Oreille County.

In 1934 he married Alice McLaughlin in Spokane.

He worked at a lumber mill in Cusick, Wash., until he moved his family to Spokane in 1943.

He worked for Coca-Cola Co. for a few years and then went to work for Diamond Drill Co. He retired in 1973.

Mr. Cannon is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alice Cannon; two daughters, Darlene Lorenzen and Beverly Blundon, both of Spokane; two brothers, Clarence Cannon of Seattle and Bill Cannon of Monrovia, Calif.; a sister, Hazel Sandstrom of Bellevue, Wash.; eight grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

Lawrence Grape Colville, Wash.

Service for Lawrence “Larry” Grape, 78, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Ione (Wash.) Congregational Church with burial to follow at Riverside Cemetery in Ione. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home of Newport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Grape, a retired postmaster, died Thursday.

He was born in East Rochester, N.Y.

He graduated from Montana State University with a master’s degree in education. He taught history and journalism in Montana.

He married Edna Hedine in 1943.

He and his family moved to the Ione area in 1951, and Mr. Grape worked at several grocery stores before going to work for the Postal Service in 1951. He retired as postmaster after 26 years.

He served as the state president of the postmasters organization in 1967 and also served on the Ione City Council for several years, including time as mayor.

He was a charter member of the North Pend Oreille Valley Lions Club and was involved in helping with the Lions Club train ride from Ione to Metaline Falls, Wash.

Survivors include his wife; a son, David Grape of North Carolina; and two brothers, Walter Grape of Arizona and Arnold Grape of North Carolina.

Dwaine Schmeginske Spokane

Memorial service for Dwaine E. Schmeginske, 65, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2218. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schmeginske, who died Thursday, was born in Watertown, S.D.

He moved to Spokane when he was 10 and graduated from Rogers High School.

He worked as an upholsterer in the Spokane area

Mr. Schmeginske served in the Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include a son, Douglas Schmeginske of Spokane; two daughters, Robbin Noel of Newman Lake and Kerrie Frank of Otis Orchards; two sisters, Jeanie Porter and Ila Mae Cain, both of Spokane; and nine grandchildren.

Augusta ‘Gussie’ Jones The Dalles, Ore.

No service will be held for Augusta Marcelline “Gussie” Jones, at her request. Burial will be at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home of The Dalles is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jones, a former Spokane resident, died Friday. She was 84.

She was born in Jefferson, S.D.

She moved to The Dalles with her family in 1918 and graduated from high school there.

She married Harry Jones in 1937 in The Dalles.

The couple moved to Spokane in 1949. Mrs. Jones worked as a buyer for the children and preteen department of The Crescent department store.

They returned to The Dalles in 1992.

She is survived by her husband; a sister, Marie Webb of Everett; and a brother, David Pierce of The Dalles.

Lawrence Yates Garland, Texas

No service will be held for Lawrence E. Yates, a retired Whitworth College professor.

Mr. Yates, 84, died Wednesday.

He was born in England and graduated from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. He also received a doctorate in theology from Princeton Theological Seminary.

He taught philosophy and Greek at Whitworth College for 33 years, beginning in 1948. He also served as pastor of Rocklyn Methodist Church for 20 years.

In 1966 he was awarded a monetary prize by the Christian Research Foundation Inc. for his translation of the French work, “John the Baptist: On the Threshold of the Gospel.” The translation was done in conjunction with his doctoral dissertation.

His wife, Jean, died in 1987.

Survivors include a son, David Yates of Seattle; a daughter, Lorna Holly of Garland; a sister, Betty McNaughton of Ontario; and two grandchildren.

Donald Pearson Chattaroy

Service for Donald C. Pearson, 41, was Monday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be at Peone Prairie Cemetery.

Mr. Pearson died Wednesday.

He was born in Omaha, Neb.

He graduated from Cheney High School and then served in the Army for four years.

He had lived in Spokane for the past 12 years and worked as an automobile salesman.

He is survived by his wife, Christine Pearson; a daughter, Vashti Anne Pearson of Louisiana; his mother, Anne Pearson of Mead; two brothers, Richard Pearson of Wenatchee and Robert Pearson of Deer Park; and a sister, Suzy Budinger of Tacoma.

Onni Rantanen Spokane

Service for Onni M. Rantanen, 88, was Monday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial was at Hunt Cemetery in Kingston, Idaho.

Born in Mullan, Idaho, Mr. Rantanen died Friday.

He was a 51-year Spokane resident and retired from Union Pacific Railroad in 1974 after 51 years.

Mr. Rantanen was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the Railroad Old-Timers.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Maxine Rantanen; two sons, Ray Rantanen of Athol, Idaho, and Norman Rantanen of Fallbrook, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

John Johnson Spokane

Service for John H. Johnson, 75, is set for 11 a.m. Friday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Johnson, who died Saturday, was born in Wadena, Minn.

He was a carpenter and a member of the Carpenters Union Local 98.

He was a Spokane resident for more than 36 years and had served in the Navy.

His wife, Alice, died in 1992.

He is survived by two sons, James and Michael Johnson, both of Spokane; six daughters, Barbara Marabello, Norma Wilmot, Loretta Barr, Linda Lyons, Jennette Johnson and Annette Johnson, all of Spokane; two brothers; three sisters; 22 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Charles Spencer Spokane

Graveside service for Charles “Chuck” Spencer was Monday at Spokane Memorial Gardens.

Born in Bryant, Wis., Mr. Spencer died Friday.

He had lived in Spokane for 45 years and was a truck driver for P.I.E. and Taylor Edwards Trucking.

He served in the Army and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Spencer is survived by his wife of 37 years, Bonny Spencer; a daughter, Bonnie Onan of Antigo, Wis.; a stepdaughter, Debra Foster of Warthen, Ga.; 10 brothers and sisters, Jack, John, Boone, Catherine, Blithe and Bess Spencer, Gloria Arndt, Nancy Christenson and Haley Ingles, all of Antigo, and Christine Mohr of Utah; and five grandchildren.

Fred Bell Jr. Spokane

Memorial service for Fred W. Bell Jr., 84, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bell, who died Thursday, was born in Wallace.

He graduated from the University of Mississippi and served as an Army captain during World War II.

He had lived in Spokane for 45 years and was an interior designer for Barkley and Brown in Spokane for many years.

There are no survivors.

Marguerite Allen Spokane

No service will be held for Marguerite T. Allen, at her request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Allen, 78, died Saturday.

She was born in Bozeman, Mont.

She had lived in Spokane for 10 years and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Allen is survived by a sister, Thelma Miller of Spokane.
