Christmas Fund 1996 Huge Finale Surpasses Goal New Toy Or Game Greets 13,660 Children, Thanks To 2,818 Donors

Beverly Vorpahl Staff writer

And the angels sang, “Hallelujah! Hallelujah!”

The Spokesman-Review Christmas Fund topped its $400,000 goal in another year of unprecedented giving.

Gifts received by noon Tuesday helped bring the day’s total to $62,709.39.

Which gives a grand - a very grand - total of $451,915.44 for the 1996 Christmas Fund.

Your donations, all 2,818 of them, helped bring cheer to the 8,685 families who applied for help, said Ken Trent, director of the Christmas Bureau.

That number breaks down to 13,660 children who each received a new toy, and 12,257 adults who received food vouchers to help them prepare a more festive Christmas Day dinner.

“It just shows what a great community we live in,” Trent said, “how many caring and concerned folks. This is a great area.”

Just think - 13,660 children woke up this morning with a new toy or game. That’s a sea of happy faces smiling this morning.

This Christmas miracle absolutely could not have been achieved without everyone’s generous support.

Thank you.

That doesn’t seem enough to say for all the support shown, but … sometimes words fail to carry the right amount of appreciation.
