Gamblers To Place Bets Via Internet

Associated Press

Point. Click. Bet.

With modem and mouse, bettors soon will be able to make their wagers via the Internet on an experimental World Wide Web site sponsored by the state Off-Track Betting Corp.

It will be the nation’s first state-sponsored race-wagering business to offer customers betting directly from a personal computer.

The New York Council on Problem Gambling criticized the plan.

“The person never has to get up from his chair and in no time at all can lose a lot of money,” said Laura Letson, director of the organization.
