Iranian police seized 330 pounds of opium Wednesday in central Iran.

Police seized the drugs during a routine check of vehicles in Mahriz province, 200 miles southeast of Tehran, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

Iran lies along a route used by smugglers in neighboring Pakistan and Afghanistan to transport drugs such as opium, hashish and heroin to Gulf Arab states and beyond.
