Quiet Prevails At Quaker Group’s Worship Service

Nina Culver Correspondent

A small group of Quakers meets each Sunday at Manito United Methodist Church to worship in silence.

There are no clergy, just seven people speaking to God.

“If someone is moved to speak, they may, but it’s largely silent,” said group member Carolynne Myall.

The Spokane Friends Worship Group, apparently the only one of its kind in Spokane, is affiliated with the North Pacific Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, a branch of the Quaker religion.

The Quaker church in Spokane known as the Spokane Friends Church is affiliated with a different branch of the Quaker religion. That church has a more traditional Protestant-style worship, says Myall.

The worship group has met at various locations around Spokane for the past 20 years, including the last seven at Manito United Methodist. Without the use of the church, says Myall, the group would be meeting in people’s homes, which it has done in the past.

“They never ask us for money, but we donate,” says Myall.

The group meets Sundays at 11 a.m. at the church, located at 3220 S. Grand, and holds a potluck lunch after its meeting every third Sunday of the month. Anyone interested in attending either the service or the lunch is welcome.
