Louisiana Tops Georgia

Tamicha Jackson scored 28 points and No. 5 Louisiana Tech held off No. 4 Georgia 71-69 in the first round of the UNLV Shootout in Las Vegas.

Louisiana Tech (11-1) opened the second half with a 16-7 run to take its largest lead 53-36 with 12 minutes remaining.

But Georgia (8-2) fought back on Kedra Holland-Corn’s five 3-pointers that pulled the Bulldogs within 65-63 with 1:45 to play.

Louisiana Tech’s LaQuan Stallworth made two free throws in the final 19 seconds to increase the Techsters’ lead to five points.

The teams played a close first half, until Jackson and Monica Maxwell hit consecutive 3-pointers to give Tech a 37-29 halftime lead.

Monica Maxwell added 15 points and Amanda Wilson had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Tech.

Holland-Corn led Georgia with 27 points and Tracy Henderson added 18.

Louisiana Tech will meet Southern Utah in today’s championship game. Southern Utah beat UNLV 71-64.

Keisha Anderson scored 10 of her 32 points over the last 5 minutes to lead No. 16 Wisconsin to an 83-77 win over No. 15 Penn State in a Big Ten opener.

Ann Klapperich hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put Wisconsin up for good, 79-74 with 50 seconds left.

With 2:16 left, Anderson drove the lane and scored to give Wisconsin (8-1) a 76-74 lead. Penn State’s Tiffany Longworth hit a 3-pointer with 43 seconds left, but Anderson made four free throws over the final 30 seconds.

Penn State (7-3) lost its third straight for the first time since 1989.

Angie Potthoff led five Penn State players in double figures with 15 points and had 14 rebounds.
