An overzealous British souvenir hunter has been deported from Vietnam after trying to steal a 20-kilogram statue of Napoleon Bonaparte from the lobby of Ho Chi Minh City’s Continental Hotel.
Lawyer Stewart McRorie, 43, was detained for six days by police and ordered out of the country after hotel reception staff noticed the brass statue was missing.
Security videos revealed the lawyer walking out with the piece after he checked out to move into the nearby Metropole Hotel. Hotel security officials soon found the statue in his new room and alerted police, staff said Dec. 26.
The solid brass statue shows Napoleon astride a horse mounted on a marble base.
