WSU Scientists Recognized For Science Advancements

Leon Radziemski, Dipak Sarkar and Gary Thorgaard, Washington State University scientists, have been elected as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, recognized for their efforts toward advancing science or fostering applications.

Radziemski, who came to WSU in 1990, is a physics professor and dean of the College of Sciences.

Sarkar is a professor in veterinary and comparative anatomy, pharmacology and physiology.

Thorgaard, at WSU since 1979, is a professor of zoology, genetics and cell biology and chairman of the zoology department.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Ronald Blackburn has been promoted to his present position while stationed at Tinker Air Force Base, Okla. He is an electronic technician and the son of Lawrence and Patricia Blackburn, Veradale.

Lance Cpl. William Anderson was recently promoted to his current position while stationed with the Marine Corps at Camp Lejuene, N.C. He is a 1995 graduate of East Valley High School and the son of Dale and Debbie Anderson, Spokane.

Terry Reed, M.D. of Spokane, has been named as a fellow of the American College of Radiology for his outstanding contributions to the field of radiology.

Sheril Carr, Chewelah, Wash., completed certification requirements for the nation’s first program in equine sports massage therapy. The program prepares students for a career in muscle therapy for horses engaged in athletic competition.

Nathaniel Hager, a sophomore at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va., was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma national honor society, which honors students who complete their freshman year with superior academic records. Hager is the son of Sarah Hager, Mead, and Michael Hager, Sunnyvale, Calif.

Luann Gordon’s poem, “My Little World,” has been published in The National Library of Poetry’s book, “The Ebbing Tide.”

Kenneth Kardong, associated professor of zoology and biology at Washington State University, received the Marian E. Smith Faculty Achievement Award for meritorious achievement in teaching. Kardong, author of “Comparative Anatomy, Function, Evolution,” also received a $5,000 award.

Elinor Nuxoll, Spokane, has been selected 1996 Pen Pal of the Year and is featured in The U.S. Directory of Pen Pals. She was nominated by readers of her pen pal newsletters and a pen friend who began writing to her 28 years ago. Nuxoll received a $100 gift certificate.

Denise Davidson, coordinator of mammography services at Northwest Imaging in Spokane, has been named Volunteer of the Year for the American Cancer Society. She has volunteered for the past 10 years.
