Emmeline Ziegenhagel Spokane

Emmeline C. (Flegel) Ziegenhagel, Spokane, recently turned 100 years old. Mrs. Ziegenhagel was born Dec. 20, 1896, in Kulm, N.D., where she taught in a one-room school.

She returned to college in Minnesota to earn a business degree and become a bookkeeper.

After she and David Ziegenhagel were married in 1919, she became postmistress in Lehr, N.D.

Her husband died in 1975.

She has lived in Eastern Washington for 35 years and at Camlu the past year.

The couple had three children: Lucile Young, Palo Alto, Calif., Delores Utgaard, Spokane and the late James Ziegenhagel.

She has nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She attributes her longevity to good food, strong genes and vodka martinis.
