New Ebola Outbreak Kills 9 In Gabon

Compiled From Wire Services

A new outbreak of Ebola has killed nine people in Gabon, state radio announced Saturday in a rare government acknowledgment of the deadly disease.

The outbreak is the third this year in the West African country. Ebola killed 30 people when it struck remote areas of Gabon in February and October.

“The entire population is extremely worried. In bars, on the streets, people talk only of the Ebola fever and its catastrophes,” the radio report said.

Ebola, one of the world’s deadliest diseases, causes massive internal bleeding and is spread through bodily fluids. It kills up to 80 percent of those infected, and there is no treatment or cure.

Gabon’s government in the past has been accused of trying to conceal Ebola cases.
