U.S., Canada Skate To Tie

Compiled From Wire Services

Peter Schaefer scored with 3:06 remaining to give Canada a 4-4 tie with the United States at the world junior hockey championships.

Schaefer came out of the right corner, deked one defenseman and beat goalie Brian Boucher for the tying goal for Canada, which hasn’t lost in three years at this tournament.

There is no overtime in the preliminary round of the 10-country competition.

Canada, coached by Spokane Chiefs’ Mike Babcock, is tied for first with the U.S. and the Czech Republic with a 1-0-1 record in Group A. The Canadians have today off before meeting host Switzerland on Monday.

The United States plays the Czech Republic today.

The last time the U.S. beat Canada was in 1992 when they took home a bronze medal.

Canada’s Christian Dube, on loan from the New York Rangers, scored twice in the first period. On his second goal, Canada had a two-man advantage when Dube flipped in the rebound of Spokane Chief Hugh Hamilton’s point shot late in the first.

B.J. Young gave the Americans a 4-3 lead on a back-hander at 15:44 of the third period after teammate Tom Poti did a nice job of keeping the puck in the Canadian zone.

The largest crowd of the tournament thus far, 2,769, including a vocal contingent of Canadians, turned out for the game at the 6,800-seat Vernets Arena.
