Rebels Announce Truce For Pope’s Visit

Associated Press

Leftist rebels announced a cease-fire Friday for the visit of Pope John Paul II.

Rebels of the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity declared a six-day truce beginning Monday for the pope’s weeklong Central American visit.

A rebel statement issued in Mexico City called the cease-fire, their third since November, a “gesture of respect” for Pope John Paul II and “a significant expression of solidarity with our people at this historic juncture.”
