Arizona Tops WSU Baseball Team

Colin Porter walked with the bases loaded in the seventh inning Saturday to force home the winning run as Arizona beat visiting Washington State 4-3 Saturday in a non-league baseball game at Tucson.

Brian Becker hit his third home run of the year and Russ Brown had a two-run double for Arizona (6-1).

WSU (5-4) scored off errors in the first and ninth, plus on Mike Wetmore’s RBI double in the third.Ben White struck out four in 2 1-3 innings for his second save in relief of Jason Ford (1-0). Cougars starter Kyle Poffenroth (1-1) took the loss.

Boxing

Dewey Welliver, 13, of the Spokane Eagles Boxing Club won the 12-13 year-old 119-pound weight class at the National Silver Gloves Championships in Kansas City, Mo.

Welliver improved his record to 33-4 with a three-round decision over Russell Jordan of Rochester, N.Y. Dewey was runner-up last year at 100 pounds.

In the 14-15 age division, Spokane boxers lost by decisions in the quarterfinals. Craig Green, 178, SEBC, lost 5-0; Mahlon Kerwick, 112, lost to Tiger Allen of Philadelphia 4-1; and Raymond Ruiz, 132, lost to Joel Salas of Oxnard, Calif., 5-0. Kerwick and Ruiz box for Lilac City Boxing Club.

Hockey

Three power-play goals allowed visiting Golden to beat the Spokane Braves 5-3 in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League game at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Spokane’s Derek Ames, on a pass from Darin Talotti, scored his first of two goals with 33 seconds gone.
