The White Sox signed free agent Kevin Tapani to a one-year contract. The right-hander, who turns 32 this month, was 10-13 as a starter for the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers last season.

At Val d’Isere, France, Germany’s Katja Seizinger took the lead in the women’s overall standings with her second World Cup victory in the downhill event in as many days. Picabo Street of Sun Valley, Idaho, came in second, 30 seconds behind. Street was then left waiting at the starting gate in the afternoon when officials stopped the second race because of fog just after Seizinger had taken the lead.

Former Texas Tech All-American Sheryl Swoopes had a big homecoming, scoring 19 points and grabbing six rebounds to lead the USA women’s national team past No. 7 Texas Tech 98-61 in Lubbock, Texas. .. Unbeaten Marco Antonio Barrera stopped challenger Kennedy McKinney at 2:05 of the 12th and final round to retain his WBO junior featherweight championship at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif.
