Compiled From Wire Services

President Alvaro Arzu escaped unharmed from an attempt on his life Sunday on the eve of a visit by Pope John Paul II, government officials said.

Security guards shot and killed the assailant, who tried to ram his pickup truck into the president and his wife, Patricia, as they rode horses in Antigua, 15 miles west of the capital.
