Chinese Quake Victims Get Help

Compiled From Wire Services

Government workers led an enormous relief operation on Monday in southwestern China, providing tents, food and medicine for tens of thousands of people left homeless by a powerful earthquake.

The magnitude 7 quake on Saturday killed at least 242 people, injured more than 14,000, and left 260,000 without homes, officials said.

National television on Monday showed women bundled in heavy clothes cooking over outdoor stoves, doctors tending victims in makeshift clinics, and Vice Premier Wu Bangguo talking with farmers beside piles of mud bricks that once were houses.
