Council Extends Apartment Ban

From Staff And Wire Reports

The apartment ban in historic Cannon’s Addition has been extended 2 months.

The Spokane City Council voted unanimously Monday to continue the current 9-month moratorium on new multi-family developments.

Residents have complained for more than two years that too many historic homes are being converted to apartments.

Last year, the council granted the moratorium so the Plan Commission could work on a zoning proposal that limits the number of multi-family units in the neighborhood.

The commission needs a few more weeks to finish that work, said Planning Director Charlie Dotson.

The moratorium forbids new building permits for apartments in the area bounded by Seventh and 14th avenues, Cedar Street and the boundary of the Manito/Cannon Hill neighborhood.

Cannon’s temporary building reprieve doesn’t apply to existing multi-family developments accidentally destroyed or damaged.
