U-Hi Still Alive On Comeback Drive

GSL boys

Long after the game, Jay Humphrey was trying to figure out exactly how his University Titans won.

The Titans escaped with a crucial 40-39 victory over Lewis and Clark at the Arena Tuesday night.

“We’re still alive,” Humphrey said. “We got some breaks in that game but we’ll take it. We’ve had our share of bad breaks. These kids deserve something good happening to them.”

The Titans (9-9, 6-8) continued to struggle offensively and Paul Mencke, the league’s leading scorer, took control for the Tigers (12-7, 8-6) as the fourth quarter opened, putting LC ahead 35-27 with 5 minutes left.

University rallied with its defense, going on a 10-point run.

After falling behind 37-35, LC got two free throws from Mike Homer to tie it but Hineman responded with a three-point play with 51 seconds to play. Mencke quickly drove for a layup and the Titans turned the ball over on a 10-second violation in the backcourt.

Homer had a shot blocked but U-Hi threw the ball away before Mencke ended up at the foul line with 18 seconds left. Mencke, who was hot in the second quarter, couldn’t connect, but Homer slipped inside for the rebound. Homer fed Mencke, but his short banker rimmed out, forcing him to foul Erik Carlson with 8 seconds left.

Carlson missed his foul shot, but the Tigers turned the ball over to end the game.

“One of the things we did was a good job with our full-court man pressure,” Humphrey said. “We got a couple things off that and Kelly Hineman stepped up for us on the offensive end.”

University’s next game has been moved up to Thursday. The Titans play North Central at U-Hi. The regional gymnastics meet is at University on Friday and Saturday.
