‘Black Sheep’ Sheer Success

Chris Farley may not be the second coming of John Belushi, but he sure is funny. Funny enough, at any rate, to his many fans.

And enough of them went to see his new movie “Black Sheep” to push it to the top of the nation’s box-office list. According to figures compiled by Exhibitor Relations Co., “Black Sheep” earned $10.6 million.

In the movie, “Saturday Night Live” alum Farley plays the troublesome brother of a political candidate (Tim Matheson). As in Farley’s first movie, “Tommy Boy,” fellow SNL cast member David Spade comes to his rescue.

“Black Sheep” beat out the week’s other two debuts, “The Juror” and “White Squall,” and the still popular “Mr. Holland’s Opus.”

“The Juror,” which stars title character Demi Moore and psychopath Alec Baldwin, ended up at No. 2 with an $8.4 million take.

“White Squall” finished at No. 5. Based on a true story, the sea yarn stars Jeff Bridges as the head of a seagoing high school who faces a tragic storm off the coast of Bermuda. It earned $3.91 million.

Disney’s “Mr. Holland’s Opus” tells the story of another dedicated teacher. Starring Richard Dreyfuss, it finished at No. 3 with an $8.1 million gross ($31.2 million in three weeks).

Back in the No. 14 spot, Disney’s “Toy Story” earned another $1.55 million to up its 11-week total to $179.4 million.
