New York Deals Smith To Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs acquired forwards Charles Smith and Monty Williams from the New York Knicks on Thursday night in exchange for J.R. Reid, Brad Lohaus and a 1996 first-round draft pick.

The Spurs will ask Smith to fill a void at power forward.

For the Knicks, the main benefit is dealing away two players with long-term contracts.

Mashburn to undergo surgery

Jamal Mashburn, out with an injured left knee since Dec. 12, likely will miss the rest of the season for the Dallas Mavericks after deciding to have surgery next week.
