Scharnhorst is a member of the National Honor Society, maintains a 3.9 grade-point average and earned the University of Idaho Top Scholar Award and two academic letters and the outstanding individual scholastic award. He earned varsity letters in baseball and cross country and plays varsity basketball this year.

Scharnhorst has an interest in education and chemistry but is undecided on a career.

Linde, son of Deborah and Richard Linde of Coeur d’Alene, chose an Eagle Project that involved replacing picnic tables and fire grills at the Bureau of Land Management Recreation Site at Beauty Bay on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Linde, whose troop is sponsored by Doris Clemans and Floyd’s Photo Studio, is a sophomore honor student at Gonzaga Prep in Spokane.

Nathaniel Owen Snider, son of Keith and Laura Snider of Bonners Ferry, has been named one of approximately 2,600 candidates in the 1996 Presidential Scholars Program.

Snider, a graduating senior at Bonners Ferry High School, was selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character, and involvement in community and school activities.

In addition, the 2,600 candidates are selected either for their exceptional performance on the SAT of the College Board or the ACT assessment of the American College Testing Program. A panel of educators will choose 500 finalists in March, and final selection will be made by a group of 30 citizens appointed by the president.

The White House will announce scholars in mid-April, and they will be invited to an awards celebration at the White House for several days in June. , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: Photo
