Former Phillies Star Dies

Compiled From Wire Services

Del Ennis, a Whiz Kid on the Philadelphia Phillies’ 1950 National League champions and a two-time All-Star, has died from complications from diabetes at his Huntington Valley home in Philadelphia. He was 70.

The power-hitting outfielder played 11 seasons with the Phillies and is still near the top of almost every offensive category. Only Mike Schmidt (548) hit more home runs than Ennis (259) for the Phillies.

Ennis played from 1946-59. He batted .284 lifetime, hit 288 home runs and had 1,284 RBIs.

The Atlanta Braves avoided arbitration with relief ace Mark Wohlers when the right-hander agreed to a one-year deal believed to be worth $1.4 million.

The Chicago Cubs signed ex-Toronto Blue Jays closer Duane Ward to a minor-league contract and are inviting him to spring training.
