“We’re just plain handicapped because of where we live.” - Coeur d’Alene City Councilwoman Dixie Reid, after a Senate committee killed a bill to allow communities outside Ada County to charge impact fees.
Votes
Here are some of North Idaho lawmakers’ votes in the past week:
Farm workers: The Senate voted 30-5 to require farms, like all other Idaho businesses, to carry workers’ compensation insurance on their employees. Sens. Tim Tucker, D-Porthill; Mary Lou Reed, D-Coeur d’Alene; Gordon Crow, R-Hayden; and Clyde Boatright, R-Rathdrum; all voted yes. Sen. Marguerite McLaughlin, D-Orofino, voted no. The bill now goes to the House.
Kindergarten: The Senate killed a bill to require all Idaho school districts to offer kindergarten, on a 18-17 vote. Boatright and Crow voted no; Reed, Tucker and McLaughlin all voted yes.
Dog days: The House killed a bill 38-29 that would have made it a misdemeanor, rather than an infraction, to allow your dog to harass or attack deer or other big game. Reps. Jeff Alltus, R-Coeur d’Alene; Tom Dorr, R-Post Falls; June Judd, D-St. Maries; Hilde Kellogg, R-Post Falls; and Don Pischner, R-Coeur d’Alene; voted no. Voting yes were Reps. Carol Pietsch, D-Sandpoint; Marvin Vandenberg, D-Coeur d’Alene; Jim Stoicheff, D-Sandpoint; and Chuck Cuddy, D-Orofino.
