Seniors Stay Young At Heart Through Gatherings

Contrary to what some young people might believe, retirement doesn’t have to mean sitting around talking to your cat.

Ask the folks involved with Young at Heart - a group of seniors who meet monthly at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 503 N. Walnut Road.

This month, they’re planning a Valentine’s Day potluck lunch Wednesday at noon. The seniors will exchange valentines and, like always, will celebrate all of the month’s birthdays.

“It’s a time when they can come and share with people their own age, and people in the church can show them love for what they’ve done over the years,” said Rita Cosby, who helps organize the meetings. Typically 30 or more seniors show up.

The church has an extensive video library, Cosby said, and the group often watches movies together. Young visitors frequently make appearances, too.

The youngsters from St. John Vianney School perform for the Young at Heart members. The kids get goodies in return.

“Sometimes they sing or put on plays, and we give them muffins (and) just make over them a bit,” Cosby said.

The group is open to both married people and singles. Cosby said the group is important not just because it gives seniors a chance to socialize, but it makes sure they are recognized, too.

“It’s special because they’re special,” she said.

Altar Society bake sale

St. John Vianney is also hosting an Altar Society bake sale tonight and Sunday.

The sale will be open following each Mass. Tonight’s Mass is at 5 p.m. Sunday Masses are scheduled for 8 and 10:30 a.m.

People are invited to bring their baked goods to sell. Those who don’t bake will just have to buy double the cupcakes.

Will they sell sunshine?

Valley Fourth Memorial Church, 2303 S. Bowdish Road, will throw a Caribbean Sun Auction on Feb. 17 from 6 to 10 p.m.

Why Caribbean? They’re decorating the multi-purpose building island-style.

Funds raised will go toward the church and adding science, computer and home economics labs to the existing multi-purpose building for the use of Valley Christian School.

Tickets are $5. For more information, call 924-9131.
