Algerian Newspaper Editor Gunned Down

Compiled From Wire Services

Unidentified gunmen killed an Algerian newspaper editor Saturday, the 58th to die since Islamic militants began targeting journalists in 1993.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the slaying of the journalist. But suspicion again fell on Muslim militants trying to topple the military-backed Algerian government and replace it with strict Islamic rule.

Abdellah Bouhechak, 45, chief editor of the weekly Revolution and Work, was shot to death by an armed group in Blida, 30 miles south of Algiers.
