Another Catholic Church Bombed

A town in northern Nicaragua appears to be the latest target of a leftist bombing campaign against Roman Catholic churches.

An explosion reportedly caused by a bomb severely damaged a Roman Catholic church late Friday in Leon, 60 miles northwest of Managua, the capital.

No one was hurt in the explosion but windows were shattered several blocks around, said Melba Sandino, a reporter for the government’s Radio Nicaragua station.

More than 20 churches have been bombed across Nicaragua over the past year. The blasts have been widely blamed on militants of the leftist Sandinista opposition movement, which has traditionally been at odds with the Vatican and the nation’s Roman Catholic leadership.
