Assault Suspect Used Chain Saw

From Staff And Wire Reports

Spokane police arrested a man early Saturday who beat his wife, threatened two people with a hunting rifle and charged officers with a chain saw.

Police were investigating a report of a man with a rifle at a home in the 2000 block of West Garner when they found the homeowner pointing the gun at Steven A. Everett, ordering him to leave about 3:30 a.m.

Everett walked out the front door with a chain saw and approached police, who had their guns drawn.

One of the officers put away his gun and tackled Everett. The 26-year-old was charged with three counts of assault, domestic violence and for obstructing police.

The homeowners told police Everett and his wife had been guests in their house for several days. About 1:30 a.m., the two began arguing and Everett began beating his wife, police said.

When the homeowners intervened two hours later, Everett pointed a .30-.30 caliber rifle at them, police said. A struggle for the gun ensued and one of the homeowners was able to wrestle the gun from Everett.

No shots were fired.

Everett was examined at the hospital, released to police and booked in the Spokane County Jail.

His wife had cuts and bruises, but did not require hospitalization.
