Gonzaga Signs Nc Volleyball Standout
Gonzaga University has signed three volleyball players to letters-of-intent, including the co-most valuable player of the Greater Spokane League.
Bulldogs coach Sean Madden announced the signing of Aimee Wilson of State AAA champion North Central and Megan Hosek and Susan Fischer, both from North Medford, Ore.
Wilson is the younger sister of former GU volleyball standout Wendy Wilson and was co-MVP in the GSL. She played middle blocker at NC, but Madden envisions her playing anywhere in the front row.
The Oregon connection led their team to the Oregon State Class 4A Tournament and both were named All-Southern Oregon Conference. Hosek is a 6-foot right-side hitter, who Madden said, “is a very natural blocker who really has only been playing left-handed for two years.” Fischer is a 6-1 middle hitter.
Stephanie Dahlstedt, who had 555 kills as a senior at Mount Vernon High School, has signed a letter-of-intent to play volleyball for Eastern Washington.
Dahlstedt was a three-time All-Northwest AA League selection, leading her team to the State Class AA Tournament three times. A 6-foot outside hitter/middle blocker, she averaged 7.6 kills per game this past season.
“Stephanie is exactly the type of athlete we want at Eastern Washington,” Eagles coach Pamela Parks said. “She will bring us size, leaping ability, all-around play and versatility at outside hitter and middle blocker. She has a court presence and self-confidence that will serve her well at the Division I level.”
College scene
Washington State’s Jenni Ruff is one of four Pacific-10 Conference players named semifinalists for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association all-star team that will play the U.S. National team April 6 in Atlanta.
Ruff, third in the Pac-10 with a 22.4 scoring average and fifth in rebounding at 8.2; Brenda Pantoja and Andrea Constand of Arizona, and Tanja Kostic of Oregon State are among 50 players who have survived the second of four stages in selecting the WBCA team.
The list will be trimmed to 15 on Feb. 21, then to a final 10 the following week.
Motocross
Skylar Dami, 8, of Spokane, won the 50cc stock class in the 1996 U.S. Amateur Supercross Series last weekend in the Seattle Kingdome.
Dami, a second-grader at Northwest Christian, won both a preheat race and the A main to win the class.
The event drew riders from throughout the Northwest as well as California, Colorado and Utah.
Skiing
The Dirt Brothers of Sandpoint qualified for the Jimmie Heuga Ski Express national finals in Vail, Colo., during last weekend’s qualifier at Schweitzer Mountain.
The team of Brandon Moon, Scott Barksdale and Karen McBirney collected $21,490 in the fund-raiser for multiple sclerosis research and treatment programs at the Jimmie Heuga Center in Avon, Colo.
That was not quite half the total of $53,391 raised by 20 coed teams that competed in a 4-hour downhill marathon and giant slalom at Schweitzer Feb. 3.
Ski Crud Club and The Starters, both of Spokane, were the No. 2 and 3 fund-raisers at $11,110 and $3,550, respectively.
Dirt Brothers topped the marathon with 69 runs and also turned in the best giant slalom time of 53 minutes, 10 seconds.
Softball
The Quad Park complex in Post Falls will hold its annual managers meeting at Templin’s Resort at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 20.
Miscellany
John Anderson, a 1966 North Central High School graduate, 1970 Washington State graduate, and trainer for the San Antonio Spurs, will be the trainer for the West team in today’s NBA All-Star Game in San Antonio.
A mandatory state rules clinic for Idaho District I softball and baseball umpires will be held Feb. 27 in the Coeur d’Alene High School cafeteria. The session for softball is at 6 p.m., baseball at 7.
