Telephone lines were busy recently as the new combined camping reservation system opened for Oregon and Washington state parks.

The system offers campers 8,600 campsites in more than 60 state parks.

It’s the first two-state reservation program.

Unlike the burdensome old system of mailing in reservation forms, callers know immediately if their reservation is valid.

The call is free and they can pay by credit card.

Both Washington and Oregon state park systems attract about two million campers a year, putting them among the top 10 for attendance in the nation.

The reservation system is open year round, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Reservations will be accepted up to 11 months in advance.

For reservations in Oregon or Washington, call (800) 452-5687.

For information about any of Washington’s 124 state parks, call (800) 233-0321.
