Woman Ordained As C Of E Archdeacon

Compiled From Wire Services

The most senior woman cleric in the Church of England was ordained Saturday as an archdeacon.

The Venerable Judith Rose was ordained at Rochester Cathedral, 30 miles southeast of London, two years after the Anglican Church in Britain permitted women to become priests.

An archdeacon is subordinate to a bishop and responsible for legal affairs in a diocese.

The ordination of women has split the church, and several dozen clergy quit to become Roman Catholic priests in protest.

The new archdeacon said her appointment was opposed by only a minority of clergy.
