Johnson’s Free Throw Caps Big Ucla Rally

Associated Press

Kris Johnson sank a free throw with 1 second remaining and 18th-ranked UCLA overcame a 19-point first-half deficit to surprise No. 13 Arizona 76-75 Thursday night in Los Angeles.

The victory gave the Bruins (17-6, 10-2) a one-game lead over No. 20 Stanford and a 2-1/2-game lead over the Wildcats (18-5, 7-4) in the Pac-10 Conference standings.

Johnson scored UCLA’s final three points on free throws to make up for a poor shooting night in which he had nine points. He had six of the Bruins’ 12 turnovers in the first half.

Ben Davis scored a career-high 25 points for the Wildcats, who blew two chances to win in the final 25 seconds. Miles Simon added 17 points, including a jumper in the lane to pull the Wildcats into a 75-75 tie after his first shot was blocked by Jelani McCoy.

Toby Bailey led UCLA with 16 points and Cameron Dollar added a career-high 12 points. The 6-foot-9-1/2 McCoy finished with 13 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks.

After a timeout, the Bruins nearly handed the game to Arizona on a technical foul for having six players on the floor. But Simon missed two free throw attempts and Davis missed a shot down low in traffic.

Johnson got the rebound and was fouled by Joe McLean. Johnson hit the first before Arizona called a timeout. He missed the second, but Arizona was unable to get off a shot before the buzzer.

Down by 11 points, the Bruins rallied with a 14-5 run that cut their deficit to 65-63 with 8:13 to play. Kevin Dempsey provided the spark off the bench, careening through the lane for a slam dunk and then hitting a 3-pointer.

Davis took the offensive rebound and scored after Corey Williams missed two free throw attempts and Reggie Geary added a basket to keep Arizona ahead by six.

Dollar scored UCLA’s next four points to bring the Bruins within two. Charles O’Bannon tied the game at 69 on a slam dunk with 4:07 to play.

Williams converted inside, but Bailey hit a jumper over two defenders to forge a 71-71 tie with 3:16 to play. Geary then fouled Bailey, who made both shots to give UCLA its first lead with 2:17 left.
