Spokane Girl Critical After Auto Accident

Gita Sitaramiah Staff writer

A 5-year-old north Spokane girl was in critical condition late Thursday after getting hit by a car on Driscoll Boulevard, police said.

Chellsey R. Newberry, 3023 W. Rockwell, was taken to Deaconess Medical Center with head and chest injuries.

The driver, Lester W. Johnson, 50, 5556 N. Greenwood, was north-bound on Driscoll at Rockwell Avenue at 5:49 p.m., when the girl ran into the street, according to police.

The girl paused as her brother and his friend crossed to the east side of Driscoll, police said.

After a moment, she continued following the others and was hit by the car.

Police said Johnson hadn’t been speeding.
