Auctions, Fine Arts Fest Scheduled

Fine arts and the feel of a fine sun tan can be found at two Spokane churches this weekend:

The Spokane Friends Church, 1612 W. Dalke, will hold its seventh Fine Arts Festival at 7 tonight and 10:30 Sunday morning.

It’s not a sale of fine arts and crafts, however. Rather, it’s a time to “bring together the Christian community to glorify Jesus Christ by the use of our God-given talents and abilities,” said the Rev. Earl Tycksen, pastor.

Members and guests will perform gifts of music and drama, read poetry, and serve refreshments during intermission, which is a ministry of its own, a church member said.

The $2 tickets are available at the church. Proceeds will be donated to Caritas Center, an outreach program of Northwest Spokane churches.

Valley Fourth Memorial Church and Valley Christian School will hold a “Caribbean Sun Auction” from 6 to 10 tonight at the church’s multipurpose building, 2303 S. Bowdish Road.

Unfortunately, tickets to the Caribbean won’t actually be auctioned off, a church spokeswoman said. The “Caribbean Sun Auction” is the event’s theme for decorations and entertainment. But eventgoers, dressed in loud Hawaiian shirts, can dream about a tropical sun and applying sun screen as they bid for hotel-package deals in Alaska, Oregon, Idaho, Canada - and Spokane.

Other items for the silent and loud auctions include paintings, dinners, theme baskets.

Profits from the $5 tickets will go toward adding a science, computer and home-economics lab to the existing multipurpose building.
