Street, Americans Finish Strong

Don’t look for Picabo Street on the podium for the women’s combined at the World Alpine Skiing Championships, even though she won the downhill portion of the event on Friday.

The same goes for Americans Megan Gerety, who was fourth, and Hilary Lindh, who was seventh. None of the three is much good at slalom, and that counts for the other half of the event on Monday.

The combined seems sure to go to a strong slalom racer like Austria’s Renate Goetschl or teammate Anita Wachter. Germany’s Katja Seizinger, the defending Olympic gold medalist in downhill, also has a shot. She was third in the combined downhill and is a slalom threat.

Street, 24, the defending World Cup downhill champion and second in combined in the last world championships, clocked 1 minute 41.95 seconds on the 3,084-meter (10,118-feet) Veleta course.
