Whitworth Women Win Big

Whitworth women’s basketball coach Helen Higgs lost her voice earlier this week. Fortunately for her, she didn’t need it much Friday night as the Pirates defeated Lewis & Clark 71-45 at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

“It’s an official’s dream come true,” Higgs said, barely, of her slight case of bronchitis.

With the win, the Pirates (7-16, 5-8) remained in the hunt for the Northwest Conference’s fourth and final postseason spot. The last-place Pioneers fell to 3-18, 1-12 .

Tonight at 6, Whitworth faces Pacific Lutheran in the final regularseason game of the year. PLU and Linfield are teams the Pirates are chasing in the standings.

“This is great momentum for us. We’ve got to take care of business (Saturday) and hope that things fall into the right place,” said Higgs.

Whitworth used a 12-0 run just before halftime to take a 40-22 lead at intermission.

Jennifer Tissue scored 27 points, hitting 11 of 15 shots from the field. Rebecca Moore added 16 points.
