Buzzer Shot Lets Oregon Tip Stanford

Associated Press

Kenya Wilkins, mired in a shooting slump most of the season, capped a 30-point performance Saturday by sinking an 18-footer at the buzzer to give Oregon a 64-62 upset of 20th-ranked Stanford at Eugene, Ore.

The loss snapped Stanford’s six-game winning streak and knocked the Cardinal two games behind first-place UCLA in the Pac-10.

Wilkins, shooting 30 percent from the field in conference play, was 13 of 19 Saturday, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range. He made driving bank shots and long jumpers, then saved his best for last.

After Dion Cross, a 94-percent free-throw shooter, sank two from the line to tie the score 62-62 with 7 seconds to play, Wilkins took the inbounds pass, dribbled down the court and cast off with Stanford’s Brevin Knight in his face.

When it went in, fans rushed the court and lifted the 5-foot-10 point guard onto their shoulders.

Neither team led by more than seven points.
