Four People Killed By Rampaging Troops

Compiled From Wire Services

Four people were killed and at least 37 injured during a three-day rampage by young army recruits demanding promotions and better pay, national radio reported Saturday.

Among those killed was a 15-year-old girl who was shot by a stray bullet as she slept, the report said.

The streets of Brazzaville were calm on Saturday, but the radio said the recruits were still in control of two military camps in the northern part of the capital of this southwestern African nation.

The uprising began Wednesday when about 1,200 recruits began roaming the streets in gangs and firing their rifles into the air.
