Tanker Spills Oil In Singapore Strait

Compiled From Wire Services

A tanker spilled 30 tons of oil in the Singapore Strait early Saturday after colliding with a cruise ship. The ship, with 1,440 people aboard, returned safely to port.

The Liberian tanker Stresa collided with the Langkapuri Star Aquarius about 10:30 p.m. Friday, port authorities said.

The collision tore an 11-inch hole in the hull of the tanker, which was still in the strait at noon Saturday but no longer leaking, authorities said. A cleanup was under way.

Two crew members and two passengers aboard the Star Aquarius were treated for minor injuries. The cruise ship had left Singapore an hour earlier for a three-day tour of the region.
