Women Who Love Men Who Wear Brightly-Colored Tights

We’ve been lifelong Superman fans, and so read with more than passing interest that Lois Lane, in the comics version, has dumped Superman because of his workaholic ways. But alas, she has taken up with Spiderman, yet another busy guy. So that got us to thinking that Lois should start a support group for women who are attracted to men who wear funny outfits, work too hard and are unavailable emotionally because of their overcommitment to humankind.

By the way, does anyone else love the latest television series featuring Superman? We like it because it acknowledges some Superman absurdities, such as his outfit (“Nice tights,” one character said recently) and the fact that the glasses Clark donned fooled Lois into thinking Superman and Clark Kent were different people.

Calendar item: Stacy Allison was the first American woman to climb Mount Everest. She wrote a book about it, and you can hear her in person at the YWCA Benefit Breakfast to be held Tuesday March 26 at 7:30 a.m. Proceeds from the breakfast will go to many of the YWCA’s important programs, such as the Domestic Violence Safe Shelter and Adaptive Aquatics for the disabled. For information, call 326-1190.

Exam time: Sacred Heart Medical Center’s mobile mammography equipment will be at the YWCA Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon. These are low-cost mammograms - $60 - and medical coupons accepted. For an appointment call 326-1190, ext. 118.

No thanks: Has anyone else been a victim of an advertising scheme that feeds on a person’s insecurity? We got a magazine ad in the mail advertising a product that helps people with their public speaking skills. There was a yellow post-it note with our name and this message: “Try this. It works! J.” If we hadn’t seen a news story about this new advertising strategy, we would have really been insulted. But there is no J who knows us personally. The ad ended up in the trash.

Women Helping Women: The group that raises megabucks each year for good women causes has announced the recipients of grants that will be given out with money generated at a May 2 luncheon. They include programs sponsored by: Career Path Services, Family Service Spokane, Deaconess Medical Center Foundation, Catholic Family Services, Northeast Community Center Association, East Central Community Center, Youth Help Association, Single Parent Outreach Connection, Transitional Programs for Women, Spokane Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention Center, Success by 6, Spokane AIDS Network and the YWCA.

She said: “The child’s sob in the silence curses deeper than the strong man in his wrath.”
