Navy To Hold Hearing On Lake Construction

From Staff Reports

The U.S. Navy will hold a public hearing on Feb. 27 regarding its plans to construct a building over Lake Pend Oreille.

The Navy’s Acoustic Research Detachment at Bayview plans to build a two-story, 25,000-square-foot model engineering facility. It would be located on pilings next to an existing pier, said Lt. Cmdr. Rick Schulz.

The hearing will begin at 7 p.m. at the Bayview Community Center. Its purpose is to identify issues that should be addressed in an environmental impact statement.

A less formal open house will begin at 6 p.m., with Navy staff available to answer questions about the $7 million facility.

Construction will start in 1997, Schulz said. The new building will allow for storage, outfitting and operation of up to five of the research center’s large-scale model submarines.
