Post Falls High School Wins Scholastic Bowl

Post Falls High School recently won the North Region INEL Scholastic Bowl competition, and Lakeland High School finished second.

Post Falls team members: Kelly Grantham, Jack Caughran, Steve Burke, Anna Zemke, Katy Hill, Kim Swanson, Ryan Hanlon and Jared Kelsey. Coach: G. Berg.

Lakeland team members:Jessica Johnson, Amber Egbert, Heather Desmarais, Elisabeth Flaherty, Corina Craviotto, Emma Rutherford and Jamie Williams. Coach: Kelly Ohlund.

Students voted to the North Region All-Star team were Anna Zemke, Jessica Johnson and Amber Egbert.

Regional winners will compete at the state level later this month, with the top two teams playing off on television for the opportunity to represent Idaho at the national level.

Lakeland Junior High School has announced the following students as Students of the Month for January: Alice Linsenmann, ninth grade; Andrew Eachon, eighth grade; and Juliet La Frenz, seventh grade. Students are nominated and chosen for their positive and respectful attitudes, eagerness to learn and activities.

Linsenmann is the daughter of Neil and Mary Linsenmann of Athol; Eachon is the son of Steve and Patti Eachon of Rathdrum; and La Frenz is the daughter of Rhonda La Frenz of Rathdrum.

Chad Turnbull, a 1994 Troy High School graduate, recently enlisted as an administrative specialist in the Army’s Delayed Entry Program.

Turnbull, son of Matthew Turnbull of Sagle, will depart for basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. in May.

Carolyn R. Standley, a 1995 graduate of Bonners Ferry High School, recently enlisted in the Army’s Delayed Entry Program as a practical nurse.

Standley, daughter of Robert and Carin Standley of Bonners Ferry, joined the Army Reserve for skill training and experience and will receive a cash incentive due to her test scores and enlistment choice.

After her basic training and advanced individual training at Fort Jackson, S.C., she will be a member of the 396th Combat Support Hospital in Spokane.

Preston Rutherford, a senior at Lakeland High School, recently enlisted in the Army’s Delayed Entry Program as an infantryman.

Rutherford, son of Preston Rutherford of Post Falls, and Geraldine Rutherford of Rathdrum, will leave for basic training at Fort Benning, Ga., in March.

He is qualified to receive up to $30,000 under the Army College Fund and joined the Army for travel and adventure.

Jonathan Asper, a 1994 graduate of Coeur d’Alene High School, recently enlisted in the Army’s Delayed Entry Program as a Patriot missile crew member. Asper, son of David and Shirley Asper of Coeur d’Alene, enrolled in the Army for skill training and experience and will leave for basic training at Fort Sill, Okla., in May.

Christian Carvajal, a 1994 graduate of Lakeland High School, recently enlisted in the Army’s Delayed Entry Program as an infantryman.

Caravajal, son of Joyce Horner of Post Falls, joined the Army to meet physical and mental challenges and left for basic training at Fort Benning, Ga., last week.
