Modern Religious Music To Be Presented

Music inspired by religious ideas has always been an important part of Western classical music. Think of Palestrina, Bach and Brahms. The musicians of Zephyr embark on “A Spiritual Odyssey” with a program of 20th-century music based on religious ideas Sunday afternoon at St. John’s Cathedral. The concert is sponsored by The Cathedral and the Arts Association.

Music by such familiar modern masters as Gardner Read, Leonard Bernstein, Olivier Messiaen and Arvo Part appears on the program along with the striking “Lacrymosa” for soprano and string quartet by the young Uzbekistani composer Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky.

Spokane musicians Kendall Feeney, Charles Bradley, Darnelle Preston, Kelly Farris, Jane Blegan and Margaret Wilds will be joined by New York-based cellist Darrett Adkins for Sunday’s performance.
