British Troops Resume Foot Patrols

Compiled From Wire Services

In the latest sign of rising tensions in Northern Ireland, armed British troops resumed foot patrols on the streets of Belfast on Friday for the first time in 11 months.

In west Belfast, eight Scottish soldiers patrolled alongside two policemen on Springfield Road, shadowed by a larger contingent of journalists and cameramen. Elsewhere, olive-drab Land Rovers shuttled troops from one base to another.

The army said the patrols, suspended on March 23, 1995, were a “precautionary measure.”
