Lemieux, Jagr Hit Milestones In Pens’ Win

Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr each scored his 50th goal in the third period as the Pittsburgh Penguins overcame Brendan Shanahan’s hat trick and beat the Hartford Whalers 5-4 Friday night.

Lemieux scored his 50th in his 50th game, the third-fastest he’s reached that level in his five 50-goal seasons. Jagr became the first Czech-born player to score 50 goals in a season. It is the third time in the Penguins’ 29 seasons that the team has had two 50-goal scorers in the same season.

Pat LaFontaine scored a pair of goals and set up two others to lead Buffalo to a win over Philadelphia.

LaFontaine started the scoring in the first period and fought off Eric Lindros’ check on a one-handed shot in the third. It was the Sabres’ second straight win.

John MacLean matched a career best with four assists and New Jersey had a rare offensive explosion in defeating Montreal.

The six-goal outburst was New Jersey’s second-highest this season and marked only the fifth time in 59 games they scored more than four goals in a game.

The right wing broke a 1-1 tie at 4:17, blasting a 20-foot slap shot past goalie Mikhail Shtalenkov. Six minutes later, Fleury clicked on the power play, tapping in a goal-mouth pass from German Titov.

The Sharks outshot Vancouver 36-26, but McLean was almost perfect as he came within 6 minutes of notching his first shutout in almost a year. McLean’s last shutout was April 11, 1995, when he blanked Anaheim 5-0.
