Kwan Rallies To Win Grand Prix; Urmanov Captures Men’s Title

Compiled From Wire Services

American champion Michelle Kwan rallied from fourth place to win the women’s event in the Grand Prix figure skating final Saturday, overtaking current world and European champions.

Alexei Urmanov, Russia’s Olympic champion, edged world champion Elvis Stojko of Canada to win the men’s title.

Security was tightened around the American team following a death threat against Kwan, 15, but she didn’t let the situation bother her.

Skating last in a field of seven, Kwan used the only triple-triple combination among the women to beat European champion Irina Slutskaya as world champion Chen Lu faded to fourth overall.

Urmanov, skating after Stojko, attempted seven triples and landed all seven.
