The Show Ain’t Over, But The Fat Man’s Still Singing

Luciano Pavarotti lives a life of operatic, and utterly melodramatic, passion.

Case in point: Like a character from a comic operetta, Pavarotti has gone public about his relationship with a much younger woman.

Pavarotti denied reports last fall that he was having an affair with his 26-year-old secretary, Nicoletta Mantovani. Now, in the Italian magazine Chi, Pavarotti is quoted as saying, “Nicoletta and I are very happy and it shows. Hiding it or denying it would be a crime.”

The story includes photos of the two swimming and kissing on a Barbados beach. Pavarotti, 61, and the father of three women in their 20s, says Mantovani, 26, “is the favorite of my harem. I hope this won’t cause any difficulties. On the the other hand, I couldn’t live like a monk.”

The “difficulties” would include his wife of 35 years, Adua Veroni.

Loose talk

“Friends” star David Schwimmer on his view of family (in GQ magazine): “I think that’s why we’re here, very simply - to have children and raise them well and try to improve the quality of life for people in general and for the ones to follow.”

Candles will burn as his guitar gently weeps

George Harrison turns 53 today.

What better place than Europe to live out a fairy tale?

Just as O.J. Simpson is said to be angling a way to live in Ireland, and thereby shelter some of his millions from pesky lawsuits, Michael Jackson is said to be looking for his own European retreat. Jackson is reportedly interested in a real-life castle, the 15th-century, 82-room Chateau de Chabennet - about 120 miles south of Paris.

And for a couple of bucks, we’ll tell you even more

J. Randy Taraborrelli’s new book claims that Oprah Winfrey’s relationship with long-time steady Stedman Graham is purely platonic. Winfrey, though, says that Taraborrelli is “yet another person who doesn’t know the facts and is trying to make money off my name.”

Good evening, The Charles replied, and thank you very much

Showing a good comic sensibility, if not particularly a sense of good manners, actress Emma Thompson greeted Prince Charles at the London premiere of “Sense and Sensibility” with the following salute: “Good evening, I’m Ivana Trump. How do you do?”

Maybe he could be Chandler’s new roommate

“NewsRadio” star David Foley told Rolling Stone that he doesn’t resent the success of a particularly popular sitcom. “It galls me to admit this,” Foley said, “but ‘Friends’ is really well-written and well-acted. But the fact that people that good-looking are intruding in comedy is really a devastating blow to the rest of us. That ‘I’m kind of homely, but, damn, I’m funny’ defense just doesn’t pull a lot of weight anymore.”

What, she buys him Clearasil during study hall?

It took Larry King to ask. He wanted to know if Christopher Reeve, paralyzed from the neck down, could still have sex. The gracious 43-yearold actor said merely that his “beautiful, extraordinary” wife, Dana, makes him feel “like a high school senior.”
