EV Girls, Cheney Boys Advance

Joe Everson Correspondent

Frontier League

The surprising East Valley girls and Cheney’s second-seeded boys survived to play another night Wednesday in the Excell District 7 basketball tournament at Eastern Washington University’s Reese Court.

Actually, they’d both like to make it two more nights.

After No. 4 seed EV had eliminated Pullman 46-38 in the opener Wednesday, Cheney held off Frontier League champion West Valley 77-62 despite 41 points by Eagles guard David Schillinger.

EV will meet the top-seeded Cheney girls Friday night at 6:30 at EWU, followed by the Riverside-Cheney boys. The Blackhawks girls and Rams boys can each go to the state AA tournament March 6-9 in Tacoma with a single victory. The Knights and Cheney boys would have to win Friday to force a Saturday showdown.

No other Eagle scored more than four points, but Schillinger, a three-year starter, couldn’t do it alone. He had 12 field goals, including four 3-pointers, and made 13 of 14 free throws.

But a 16-point first-half run by the Blackhawks (12-11) pushed them to a 17-point lead late in the second quarter, and they resisted every attempt by the Eagles to come back. The Eagles were down by 17 again midway in the third, then had an 11-2 streak near the end of the third period to cut it to eight, but never got any closer.

The last time the Eagles (17-6) got that close, Cheney led 56-48, but Blackhawks junior August Parker had a monster dunk and three-point play off his own steal that boosted it back to 61-48 with 5 minutes to play.

After that, WV had to foul on nearly every possession, and 15 of Cheney’s last 16 points were from the foul line. They didn’t shoot a first-half free throw, but were 20 of 27 in the second. WV made 19 of 23, including 12 of 12 by Schillinger in the second half.

Richard DeMulling led Cheney with 23 points and nine rebounds, while Parker scored 17 and Tucker Urdahl 10.

Girls

East Valley 46, Pullman 38

The Knights blew a nine-point third-period lead as the Greyhounds scored 12 straight for a 30-27 lead. Pullman’s Natalie Weeks scored four consecutive baskets during that 4-minute run, and EV was on the ropes.

But EV (13-10) responded with three-point plays by Star Olson and Farrah Parsley and - after Pullman’s Leah Wilde hit a jump shot - Olson scored again for a 35-32 Knights lead after three periods.

EV didn’t score a field goal for more than 4 minutes into the fourth period, though, and Weeks’ post move with 4:02 left in the game tied the score 38-38.

That was the last time Pullman scored, however, as the Knights scored the last eight points of the game. Pullman fouls, turnovers and missed shots trashed the Greyhounds’ comeback hopes.

Olson, who had 11 second-half points, led EV with 15 and Angela Overdorff had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Weeks finished a strong tournament with 19 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.

Molly Fisher led the Hounds with 11 boards.
